DC’s new CFO could start as early as December

WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia’s new chief financial officer could
take over as early as December.

D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans said Wednesday that he would support the
confirmation of Phoenix CEO Jeffrey DeWitt to replace the district’s longtime
CFO, Natwar Gandhi. Evans chairs the council’s finance and revenue committee. He
plans to send DeWitt’s confirmation resolution to the full council next week.

The council would then vote on whether to confirm DeWitt on Nov. 5. After that,
DeWitt must be formally appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray, and from that point,
Congress has 30 calendar days to weigh in on the appointment.

The CFO operates independently from the rest of the city government to ensure
that the city doesn’t overspend. The position was created by Congress in the
