Couple placed in medical comas after house explosion near Phoenix

PEORIA, Ariz. — A man and his girlfriend who were both critically burned
in a Peoria house explosion are improving but face a long road to recovery.

Authorities said 32-year-old Beau Zimbro and 21-year-old Tiara Del Rio have been
in a medically induced coma since the day after the Oct. 15 explosion, believed
to have been caused by a natural gas-line break.

Arizona Burn Center doctors at Maricopa Medical Center said the couple won’t be
leaving the center for at least two months.

They said Zimbro has first- and second-degree burns over 60 percent of his body
while about half of Del Rio’s body is covered in second-degree burns.

Peoria police said Zimbro and Del Rio were inside the house near Cholla Street and 75th Avenue when she lit a
candle that acted as a detonator for the explosion.

Friends and family members are worried about mounting medical bills for the couple. Donations are being taken at Search for “Tiara Del Rio.”
