No shows at Casa Grande Art Museum this season

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Funding shortages mean no shows at the Casa Grande
Art Museum this season.

The museum normally hosts about five or six shows a year with one featuring
work by students and others that showcase local artists.

Museum board President David Fitzgibbons says the cost of the gallery’s
utilities and maintenance make putting on shows cost prohibitive this year.

He tells the Casa Grande Dispatch the funding shortage
is largely due to the loss of local transportation assistance fund grants.

That fund was abolished in 2010 in response to the state budget crisis. A bill
in the Legislature sought to re-establish it, but no grants have been given for
the current fiscal year.

Exacerbating the museum’s funding deficit is a severe decline in private
donations Fitzgibbons attributes to the recession.
