TEMPE, Ariz. — Every year, hundreds of bikes are reported stolen by Arizona State University students, most from the Tempe campus.
This year, ASU is offering a new tool to stop thieves.
Next to the busy Memorial Union, students can hand off their bikes to Parking and Transit Department workers. The bikes are safely stored in an enclosed area where employees keep an eye on them.
Just like a car valet service, students then show a ticket to pick up their bikes. No tipping is allowed.
Past surveys showed about 10,000 students rely on bikes to get around.
Cronkite Village reportrf there was at least one arrest on the Tempe campus each day for bike theft in 2012.
More bike valet services are being considered for the Tempe and downtown Phoenix campuses.
