‘Tis the season for food, fun and family and this holiday season, a Michigan restaurant is making sure nobody is left hungry or alone.
For those needing a meal, some company or a little bit of both, George’s Senate Coney Island will be serving free meals all day on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, according to the Huffington Post.
Restaurant owner George Dimopoulos said he began offering the deal nearly a decade ago after remembering his own struggles with homelessness. Dimopoulos came to the U.S. from Greece when he was 23 and had just experienced what it was like to be homeless.
“The reason I do this is because I was alone one time,” he said in an interview with ABC News. “I remember the good times and bad times.”
Dimopoulos said about 75 to 100 people are served each year as a part of his free Thanksgiving meals.
“I see people coming into the restaurant, and I say, ‘Are you by yourself?’ and they say, ‘I am, I’m alone,'” he said in an interview with Today. “They need a little attention and help. That’s what I believe. I don’t care how much it costs. I make good money, so I can help those people.”
Dimopoulos said although his restaurant takes a little bit of a financial toll from the gesture, he said it is well worth it.
“I lose a little bit (of money), but I feel good to help them,” he said in an interview with ABC News. “I hope the whole country gives back. People really appreciate it.”
