PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer is on paid administrative leave after
shooting a man whom she believed had a gun.
The 21-year-old man was taken to the hospital and scheduled for surgery Sunday.
Police spokesman James Holmes said the 27-year-old officer fired one round at
the man, striking him in the leg late Saturday night. Holmes said the man had
been fumbling with something at his waist and turned quickly toward the officer
in a threatening manner.
The officer and her partner had been investigating a complaint about a loud
party when they heard a gunshot at a city park.
Holmes said the man ignored commands to stop.
The officers later found a handgun near him. Holmes said the man faces a charge
of aggravated assault.
