ST. DAVID, Ariz. — Authorities in southeastern Arizona said a 56-year-old
Tucson man was killed by a slide of rocks, dirt and debris while he and a friend
were looking in a wash for rocks and minerals.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said search and rescue personnel on
Thursday found William T. Lawrence under material several feet deep on the side
of a wash near St. David.
According to the sheriff’s office, the friend said Lawrence was digging in the
wall of the wash when she heard a noise.
The friend told authorities there was a large pile of material where Lawrence
had been digging. She made her way out of the wash and flagged down a passing
motorist for help.
An autopsy will be conducted, and the Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
