Agency to make improvements to Arizona highway rest areas

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation said there will be
changes at its 14 highway rest areas under a new contract.

The department said the contract with Brentwood, Tenn.-based Infrastructure
Corp. of America is a departure from a previous arrangement with another
company. That arrangement involved separate contracts for each rest area.

According to ADOT, the new operator will implement a sponsorship and
advertising program to generate revenue, with the state promised at least $1
million in revenue over the next 10 years.

ADOT’s announcement also said new features include may Wi-Fi access, dog-walking areas,
charging stations for electric vehicles and ATM machines.

Food and beverage shops won’t be added within the rest areas. That’s barred by
federal law.

ADOT said the current caretakers will be retained under the public-private
