WHITERIVER, Ariz. — A sawmill on the Fort Apache reservation in eastern
Arizona is reopening, thanks to a $10 million loan.
U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick announced the funding Monday to the White Mountain
Apache Tribe. She said it will go toward repairing and replacing equipment, and
rebuilding the log deck at the Fort Apache Timber Company.
Tribal Chairman Ronnie Lupe estimated that 185 jobs will be created with the
opening of the tribally owned sawmill in Whiteriver.
Kirkpatrick said it also ensures the tribe has a role in a massive forest
restoration project in Arizona.
