TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Arizona is creating four tenured
professor positions to expand its transgender studies courses.
University Provost Andrew Comrie said Wednesday the positions will help the
school’s Institute for LGBT Studies develop into a leading resource.
The school said two positions would start a year from now and be based in the
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The other two will not be filled
until next year, with a start date of fall 2015.
Comrie said the issues that transgender people face in politics, medicine and
other areas are relevant topics that warrant university-level expertise.
Institute director Susan Stryker said the professors would offer courses
related to transgender issues along with classes in their primary area of study.
