Federal agency: Phoenix hospital lab kept improper records

PHOENIX — A U.S. Department of Agriculture report said a Phoenix research
hospital improperly maintained records for cats in its lab, allowing one cat’s
weight to drop.

The USDA said Barrow Neurological Institute researchers failed to keep
consistent track of food intake and weight for the cats, according to the July
17 inspection.

The inspection also said one cat’s food was restricted to the point that it
lost more than 10 percent of its body weight.

In a statement Wednesday, the hospital said it corrected the issues, which
involved minor document and procedural errors, and has reinforced its
training.

Barrow also said veterinary staff examined the animals in this case and found
them to be in good health.

Stop Animal Exploitation Now, an animal welfare group, asked the USDA Wednesday
to fine the hospital.
