TEMPE, Ariz. — There was a battle on the gridiron Tuesday between members of the Arizona Cardinals and the nation’s military, but no pads were worn.

Some players and members of the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy squared off against each other on the virtual battlefield as part of the Pro vs. G.I. Joe program. The program is designed to raise awareness for Marines from the Wounded Warrior Regiment.

“Anytime we can say thank you it goes a long way,” backup quarterback and viral sensation Drew Stanton said. “They truly are the heroes that we look up to. We owe a lot to them and it’s as simple as coming out and playing video games and getting beat like I did.”

The regiment provides assistance to wounded, ill and injured Marines, sailors attached to Marine units and their family members. It assists them as they return to duty or transition to civilian life.

American Airlines gave away a pair of roundtrip tickets to the Wounded Warrior Regiment at the event.

Many of the troops who faced the professional football players in both “Madden” and “Call of Duty” will be in the stands — at no charge — Sunday night when the Cardinals take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

We want to hear from you.
