1 injured after helicopter crashes in Arizona forest

PAYSON, Ariz. — Authorities in eastern Arizona said one person is injured
after a helicopter made a crash landing in a Tonto National Forest wilderness
area.

Lt. Tim Scott of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said the helicopter went down
about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday some 20 miles west of Payson. That’s a forest
community 70 miles northeast of Phoenix.

Television footage showed the helicopter intact on the ground with only its tail
apparently broken off.

Scott said six people were aboard and only the pilot was injured. He said the
unidentified man was airlifted to a Scottsdale hospital with non-life
threatening injuries.

Arizona Public Service said one of its employees was aboard the helicopter on
“an economic development mission.”

The Bell helicopter was leased by APS and was flying from Scottsdale to
Flagstaff.
