PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer asked her citizens to ring bells Wednesday to mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
“Tomorrow, as we commemorate a milestone anniversary of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ address, let us take time to revisit and reflect on his message,” she said in a press release. “Dr. King stirred the country with his vision for a brighter future. The principles he so eloquently preached from those steps in 1963 are no less significant today. Let us carry on the legacy of that speech – and of Dr. King himself.”
Brewer called King’s speech a “defining moment in our nation’s Civil Rights Movement.”
Brewer asked bells to be rung at noon to celebrate the speech.
