Turning shipping containers into livable apartments

It gives a whole new meaning to the word recycle, but two partners are turning shipping containers into livable apartments in Phoenix.
As reported in the Phoenix Business Journal, StarkJames partners, Brian Stark and Wesley James designed and developed an avante-garde apartments. They are the first apartments made out of shipping containers in the western U.S.
The containers are part of the Grand development in downtown Phoenix and has eight apartments that are fashioned out of 16 seaport shipping containers.
The containers are approximately 740 square feet and are expected to be rented out for $1,000 a month.
“This is a true team of pioneers who have created something brand-new in Phoenix,” said Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton in a statement. “There wasn’t a playbook regarding shipping container housing or a president in other cities, but we knew it was important for Phoenix to help this project a reality. This is one of our most unique neighborhoods, and Containers on Grand is a perfect addition.”
The five-ton shipping containers were brought in from the Port of Long Beach and construction started in March. StarkJames is also building similar shipping container apartments and artists studios space at Portland and Second streets.
