Arizona scientists offer tips for mountain lion encounters

PHOENIX — University of Arizona scientists are offering safety tips to residents
who live in mountain lion country after a big cat was killed this week in suburban Phoenix.

Lisa Haynes, coordinator of the university’s Wild Cat Research and Conservation
Center, said that while human encounters with mountain lions are
rare, there are tips for protection for face-to-face situations with one.

She said the first rule is to never run because it could encourage the cat to give chase.

Haynes said to stand your ground and
maintain eye contact, try to appear as large as possible and throw whatever is handy at the animal. If the cat does attack, fight back.
