Dad gets prison in Phoenix child-abuse case

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man accused of child abuse after his young son
overdosed on a prescription painkiller has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors said 38-year-old Anthony Casillas also was sentenced
Friday to three years of supervised probation for child abuse and attempted
child abuse.

Casillas and the child’s mother were accused of giving their then 2-year-old
son a mixture of Kool-Aid and methadone at a Phoenix motel on Oct. 23, 2011. The child survived.

Authorities said that caused the toddler to overdose. The parents said they’d given their son the mixture because of pain from his bleeding gums and rotting teeth.

Court records indicated the child had methadone, amphetamine, acetone and
nicotine in his system.

The child’s mother was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January plus lifetime
