Citing security, Arizona county attorney opts out of government email

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles is balking at
using the county government’s general email system, saying he’s not confident
it’s secure.

Voyles said material confidential under the attorney-client privilege isn’t
protected under a system used throughout the county government.

Voyles cited Sheriff Paul Babeu’s complaints that there have been multiple
security breaches involving confidential sensitive information such as deputies’
home addresses and investigation details.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reported that Voyles asked for
a separate email system for his office but the county Board of Supervisors said
no.

A county official estimated the cost of such a system at $3.9 million.

Former Chief Criminal County Attorney Richard Platt said the email
system is secure and that firewalls restricted access by other county
departments.
