Arizona to disperse $8.4M for school safety

PHOENIX — A legislative oversight committee has cleared the way for the
Arizona Department of Education to disperse more than $8 million to boost school
safety.

Most of the money will go toward the salaries and benefits of 95
school-resource officers for more than 100 schools.

The rest of the money will pay for security upgrades and emergency planning.

The Arizona Republic reported that the schools receiving
the grants were chosen two years ago through a competitive process.

The San Carlos Unified School District had two school-resources officers the
previous year, but it was the only district not renewed for the coming school
year. Officials said that’s because the district didn’t hire a qualified officer.

Officials said some schools will be expected to share their officers.
