PHOENIX — Some Mesa, Ariz., children are being turned away from public pools, but an effort is underway to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
“Our pools are actually, as a group and individually, the finest in the country, but some children aren’t able to enjoy them,” said Mesa Mayor Scott Smith.
The problem is, for whatever reason, these children are not wearing the appropriate swim attire. According to Mesa officials, health regulations prohibit these children, who may not even own a swimsuit, from swimming in street clothes.
Smith is encouraging residents to donate swimsuits to any Mesa public pool.
“I guarantee you it will be put to good use. You’ll make a kid really, really happy,” he said.
