Tempe man’s emu dies after it escapes from home

PHOENIX — Authorities say a man’s pet emu is dead after it escaped from
its home and was chased around a Tempe neighborhood.

Tempe police and workers from the Phoenix Zoo tried to corral the bird as it
ran wild in the area of McKellips Road and College Avenue.

Police say the bird didn’t belong to the zoo and that the private owner had
“Ichabod” for 35 years.

The emu was tackled by police officers,
but apparently succumbed to the heat.

“As soon as they restrained it, the temperature of the bird raised significantly and it passed away,” said Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley, adding that most of the officers did not know what an emu was prior to the call.

Emus are legal to own in Arizona.
