Woman arrested in Mexico doesn’t blame home country

PHOENIX — The Arizona woman arrested and detained after Mexican
authorities said they found 12 pounds of marijuana under her bus seat says she
doesn’t blame her home country.

Yanira Maldonado said Friday in comments aired on Phoenix Fox station KSAZ that
“a few people” are responsible for what happened to her. She added, “I’m
still going to go back.”

The 42-year-old Maldonado was released late Thursday from a prison near
Nogales, Mexico, after a judge dismissed drug-smuggling charges against her.
She’d been traveling home with her husband to the Phoenix suburb of Goodyear
after attending a funeral when she was arrested May 22.

On Friday, Gov. Guillermo Padres of the Mexican state of Sonora, where Nogales
is located, apologized for Maldonado’s ordeal during a visit to Phoenix.

Padres says he made sure she was safe and wasn’t transferred to a federal
prison and worked to ensure court proceedings went quickly.
