Appellate court to hear Grand Canyon abuse case

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — An Indiana man serving time for forcing his grandsons
on a grueling hike in the Grand Canyon says the evidence didn’t support his

An attorney for Christopher Alan Carlson also argues in documents filed Friday
with the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals that jurors improperly were
instructed on an offense for which Carlson wasn’t originally indicted.

Carlson has said that while he treated his three grandsons roughly, he wasn’t
criminally negligent and didn’t endanger their lives or health.

The filing wraps up briefing in the case. The appellate court is set to hear
oral arguments on July 9th.

Carlson is asking that the convictions be reversed or a new trial ordered.

He’s serving a 27-month prison sentence with an expected release date in
