Arizona high court to review school funding case

PHOENIX — The Arizona Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal of a case
that found the state Legislature must give schools an annual funding increase
even in lean years to account for inflation.

The high court decided Wednesday to review a January appeals court decision in
a case brought by school districts who complained that the Legislature violated
the Voter Protection Act when they stopped providing the annual inflation
adjustment in 2010. Lawmakers instead only increased transportation funding and
cut a $61 million increase in general school spending.

The annual 2 percent funding hike is required under a 2000 ballot measure that
raised the state sales tax by 0.6 percent.

The court will hear arguments about whether voters may require the Legislature
to increase school funding in July.
