Chandler Unified postpones pay-to-play decision

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Chandler school officials have postponed considering a
play-for-participation plan.

The Arizona Republic reports that the Chandler Unified School District’s
governing board now will consider the plan next spring at the earliest.

Last June, the district proposed charging athletes, band members, cheerleaders
and pommies to participate in sports and other activities.

High-school students would have paid $100 per sport starting next school year.

Those who play more than one sport in an academic year would have paid a
maximum of $200. Families would have paid no more than $400 an academic year.

Activity fees would have been $100 for marching-band members.

Chandler Unified’s athletic program costs $3.3 million a year to operate,
including maintenance of fields and courts.
