Phoenix-area teen pleads not guilty to explosive-device charge

TEMPE, Ariz. — A Tempe teenager accused of having an improvised
explosive device in his bedroom in his family’s home has pleaded not guilty.

Joshua Prater, 18, entered the plea Thursday to a charge of misconduct involving
weapons. He had been arrested May 7.

The Marcos de Niza High school student was arraigned in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Police have said a cleaning woman found the device inside the home and took it
to a fire station. Firefighters notified police, and the bomb squad responded and disabled the
