Suspended Phoenix-area policeman will fight demotion

GLENDALE, Ariz. — A former Glendale assistant police chief said he’s
appealing his demotion and suspension.

Greg Dominguez was demoted to commander and given a 40-hour suspension for
violating policy earlier this year.

Dominguez told Phoenix TV station KPHO that his teenage son has struggled with
addiction to the synthetic marijuana product known as “spice.”

The 27-year police veteran said he twice went to a Peoria smoke shop and
threatened to kill the clerk and burn the place down if they didn’t stop selling
spice to his son.

The shop owner lodged a complaint with Glendale police and an internal
investigation determined Dominguez violated department policy.

Interim Chief Debora Black demoted Dominguez.

City officials announced Tuesday that Black has been named the city’s
police chief. She had been interim chief since March 2012.
