Phoenix mayor speaks with light rail riders

PHOENIX — Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton got input from light rail passengers Friday morning on how to improve the city.

Stanton hopped on a train at 19th Avenue and Montebello, and immediately started introducing himself to riders.

“These are public transportation advocates so a lot of people are advocating for even more light rail, they want longer hours,” Stanton said.

Stanton rode the train to 1st Avenue and Jefferson as part of his PlanPHX initiative, which encourages residents to share ideas with city leaders and planners.

Several riders told the mayor they want to see more parks and recreation, a more vibrant downtown and a better emphasis on recycling.

Stanton said he’ll incorporate the ideas into the city’s Proposed General Plan.

“That plan is going to be voted on by the people of Phoenix, and that becomes our guiding document for the next 10 years,” Stanton said. “This is not just fun stuff. This will actually make a difference in the plan that will guide our city.”
