Phoenix motel fire sends man to hospital in critical condition

PHOENIX — A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life after a fire broke out in a motel room Thursday morning.

The Motel 6 at Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue was evacuated. Fire investigators haven’t pinpointed the cause of the fire, which was contained to one room. Phoenix FD Captain Tony Mure said the victim is in critical condition because of smoke inhalation.

“Firefighters pulled him from the room. Usually in fires people succumb to smoke,” Mure said.

Mure said there were no other injuries. The fire started near the air-conditioning unit.
