Sale of Tucson school property prompts probe

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson school district officials have enlisted the help of police with an investigation into allegations that employees have been selling district property illegally for years.

At least six employees who work for the Tucson Unified School District’s property control department are on administrative leave, but no one has been charged.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that Superintendent John Pedicone and other district officials refused to comment beyond confirming that an investigation is being done.

Police Sgt. Chris Widmer says it’s alleged that one employee paid subordinates to load up tables, desks, chairs, chalkboards and interactive white boards. None of the money made from the sale of the items went back to the school district.

The allegations surfaced in mid-April. They were reported by the district to police on Thursday.
