It’s a hit: Diamondbacks, MLB taking kids to movies

PHOENIX — Former Arizona Diamondbacks Junior Spivey and Augie Ojeda are taking over 400 kids to the movies Friday, to watch a free screening of the Jackie Robinson film, “42.”

Major League Baseball is sponsoring the event around the country. The D-backs have selected children from 32 metro Phoenix Boys and Girls Clubs for the 6 o’clock showing.

Ojeda will host a post-screening question-and-answer session at Tempe Marketplace Harkins Theatre, while Spivey will do the same for a group at Phoenix Metrocenter Harkins.

Robinson broke baseball’s color line in 1947.

“He probably meant more to our sport than any player in history,” said Arizona Diamondbacks president/CEO Derrick Hall. “It’s important that we teach today’s youth what Robinson meant to the sport but to the nation as well.”
