PHOENIX — Phoenix is planning two more gun buyback events, and Mayor Greg
Stanton is encouraging more people to bring in unwanted guns and to donate to
keep the program going.
The first buyback events put together last Saturday by Phoenix police, the
mayor and Arizonans for Gun Safety brought in more than 800 guns. The guns were
collected at three area churches.
Stanton announced the final count Wednesday: 442 handguns, 162 shotguns, 198
rifles and one assault rifle. He says he was surprised with the turnout.
This Saturday’s buyback will be held at the Betania Presbyterian Church.
Residents will be able to receive gift cards for groceries in exchange for
their unwanted weapon. The amount of the gift card varies depending on the type
of weapon turned in.
