Dip in scores puts Arizona students on par with national averages

PHOENIX — A dip in national testing scores put Arizona students on par with national averages in both math and reading.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, sometimes referred to as the Nation’s Report Card, measures math and reading scores in fourth and eighth grade students. While Arizona’s scores have remained fairly stable since 2013, the nation has seen a dip in scores.
“It is a testament to the hard work of Arizona teachers and students that NAEP scores have remained stable given the many significant changes to our state’s education system in recent years,” Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas said in a release. “Our schools should absolutely be commended for the steadiness seen in these results.”
After making small gains, Arizona finished an average of 2.75 points below national means in 2015, down from 4.75 in 2013. The state made its biggest gains in eighth grade math and reading.
