Gov. Brewer vetoes bill requiring tax details on ballot

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill requiring ballots for
municipal and county bond elections to contain details of the debt and how
they’ll increase property taxes.

Senate Bill 1371 also would have required similar disclosures for local sales
tax increases.

Brewer said in a veto letter Thursday that ballots are designed for voters to
mark their choices for a candidate or measure and not be informed about the
details. She said that information belongs on publicity pamphlets mailed to
voters and available at the polls.

She also worried about larger ballots increasing costs.

Brewer is a former Secretary of State, the state’s chief election officer.

The bill by Republican Sen. Gail Griffin of Hereford was designed to help
inform voters of the tax consequences of their votes.
