Police: Driver in Phoenix crash could face charges

PHOENIX — Authorities say a man believed to be driving impaired could face
charges in a Phoenix crash that killed a young boy.

Phoenix police say 3-year-old Elijah Ricks died from his injuries Wednesday and
his 5-year-old sister is clinging to life in a hospital.

Police say an 18-year-old driver allegedly caused the collision about 6:30 a.m.
Monday near 32nd Street and Southern Avenue.

They say the driver was swerving in and out of traffic and hit a curb and some
shrubs before overcorrecting, then crashed head-on into a sedan carrying a woman
and three children.

Police say a 1-year-old girl remains hospitalized but has non-life threatening
injuries.

They say the driver who allegedly caused the accident may have been under the
influence of drugs or alcohol. His name hasn’t been released.
