Jan Brewer vetoes bill creating music therapy license

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill that would have
created a new state certification for music therapists.

The letter accompanying Brewer’s Tuesday night veto says the legislation is
ambiguous and fails to create “basic oversight authority.”

Brewer says Senate Bill 1437 would have required the Department of Health
Services to issue state certification to music therapists without providing a
way to revoke the certification or impose any other penalties.

Brewer says the bill should have included a background check requirement
because music therapists often work with vulnerable children and adults.

The measure passed the Republican-controlled Senate and House with bipartisan

The Arizona Music Therapy Association backed the measure. The association hoped
the measure would signal to the public that music therapy is a legitimate
profession and service.
