Plan on hold for mental-health hospital in Gilbert

PHOENIX (AP) _ A developer’s plan to build a mental-health hospital next to an
elementary school in Gilbert is on hold.

That’s after staunch opposition from parents led the company to announce its
intention Thursday to seek a different location.

Kentucky-based hospital operator Springstone had hoped to open Gilbert’s first
behavioral-health institution by fall 2014.

But The Arizona Republic reports that concerned
neighbors and parents from Pioneer Elementary School mobilized against the

Gilbert’s economic development team will work with Springstone to find a new
potential site for the hospital, which was to have 72 beds and cost about $14
million to build.

Springstone operates four hospitals already in Ohio, Indiana and Texas and has
three sites under construction.
