Arizona man pleads not guilty in HIV-fear killing case

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — A Phoenix-area man has pleaded not guilty to
first-degree murder charges in the killings of his wife and their adult son.

Eugene Maraventano pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior

According to Goodyear police, the 64-year-old man told investigators he carried
out the killings out of a fear he had given his wife HIV from prostitutes he
used to frequent and out of concern about what would become of his jobless son.

Investigators said Maraventano believed his wife was ill and feared she could
test positive for a disease he might have contracted from prostitutes.

The investigators also said in court records that Maraventano had planned to
kill himself after killing his wife and wondered what would become of his
27-year-old son who lived with his parents.
