PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix said Monday it wants to be more successful at separating recyclables from solid waste.
“We were in the 16th to 17th percentile diversion rate by weight last year,” said Terry Gellenbeck, Solid Waste Administrative Analyst for the City of Phoenix. “Now, we’re at about 18th to 19th. The mayor has asked us to get up to 40 [percent] by the year 2020.”
To help the city achieve that goal, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has plans to launch the “40 by 20 Initiative” in the upcoming months. The educational initiative will focus on the benefits of recycling to the environment and the economic impact of recycling.
