Phoenix man gets prison in 2011 police shooting

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man accused of shooting and wounding two Phoenix
police officers in 2011 has been sentenced to 63 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors said 37-year-old Michael Ruben Alvarez was sentenced

He was arrested in August 2011 on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder
and was booked into jail on aggravated assault, car theft, burglary and weapons

Police said they tried to question Alvarez on Aug. 4, 2011, when he fired at
them, grazing one officer in the head with a bullet and shooting another in the
arm. Both officers were treated and released from a hospital the same day.

Court records showed Alvarez was convicted in 1995 and 2001 on aggravated assault
charges. Both cases involved a confrontation with police officers.
