Arizona Attorney General invites city attorneys to discuss civil unions

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne is inviting city attorneys to
an April 29 meeting to discuss legal questions surrounding city-approved civil
unions.

Bisbee on April 2 approved an ordinance authorizing civil unions, but the City
Council has since put the local law on hold pending a review and possible
changes.

The council acted after Horne threatened the southern Arizona city with a
lawsuit.

He said some aspects of Bisbee’s ordinance conflict with state law and that
residents could be misled about the legal meaning of a city-certified civil
union.

Horne said he wants to guide city attorneys on what cities can legally do and
not do.

Tempe City Councilman Kolby Granville has said he will propose approval of civil unions
in that Maricopa County community.
