Arizona woman pleads guilty in fake cancer case

PHOENIX — A Gilbert woman who faced dozens of felony charges for
pretending to have cancer in order to collect donations has admitted to the

Superior Court records show Kelly Ann Wasko pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges
of theft, attempted theft and fraudulent schemes. Sentencing is set for May 7
before Judge John Ditsworth.

Wasko’s scam began in December 2011 when she told her adult daughter that she
needed a bone marrow transplant and her insurance policy would not cover it.

Her daughter, who lived in Colorado, built a Facebook fundraising page. More
than $12,000 were collected for Wasko.

The daughter became suspicious of her mother’s claims and contacted

Wasko was arrested in December 2012. She initially pleaded not guilty.
