Phoenix suburb to consider drone regulation laws after several incidents

PHOENIX — Another city in the Phoenix area is considering cracking down on the use of drones.
City of Glendale leaders are considering restricting the use of drones near Glendale airport, Luke Air Force Base and the University of Phoenix Stadium. Unless an unmanned aircraft is flown in restricted airspace, there are currently no laws for police to enforce drone use.
“(Police) can’t take them away, they can’t cite them for anything so I think that is what they are looking for,” Glendale City Councilman Gary Sherwood said. “They are just looking at some basic ordinances that really border commonsense.”
Sherwood said there have been several incidents that sparked the conversation between Glendale City council members and police leaders in the city about drone restrictions.
“We have had some close calls at the airport in Glendale, I know Luke (Air Force base) has had a couple,” he said.
Among other councilmembers, Sherwood said he believes restricting drone use could potential help keep citizens safer while respecting their privacy rights.
