Fresh and Easy to start shutting down stores, 9 in Phoenix area

PHOENIX — The grocery chain landscape began to get a bit less crowded this week, when Fresh and Easy said it would begin shutting down its stores.
The Los Angeles Time reported the struggling California-based chain’s 97 stores were going to be closed over the next few weeks.
There are nine stores in the Valley, stretching from Litchfield Park in the western Phoenix suburbs to Mesa in the eastern suburbs.
The newspaper added there were hopes for a buyer, but that is an old hope. The chain closed around 50 stores in Arizona, California and Nevada in March and began to offer online shopping services to stave off more trouble.
That didn’t work and the front office put its hopes into finding a buyer.
The chain never really caught on with the majority of U.S. shoppers. British retailer Tesco arrived with great self-produced fanfare in 2007.
By 2013, a Los Angeles-based investment company, Yucaipa Companies, bought the chain, which had filed for bankruptcy.
