Top 5 reasons to donate to a community college

This article is Sponsored by Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation.

In recent years, the popularity of community colleges has grown. In Arizona alone, the 10 Maricopa Community College campuses provide affordable educational opportunities for more than 250,000 students each year. Like traditional universities, community colleges rely on donations to offer the quality of education each student deserves.

Here are five reasons to donate to a community college.

Helps provide scholarships

The rise in students attending community colleges does not mean there are more students who can afford the cost of higher education. In fact, according to National Centers for Educational Statistics, the percentage of first-time degree and certificate-seeking undergraduate students receiving any financial aid for two-year institutions, increased from 68 percent in 2007-08 to 78 percent in 2012-13.

Donating to community colleges helps to provide scholarship money to students who cannot otherwise afford higher education. In Maricopa, the current fund-raising campaign has amassed $28 million to be used towards scholarships, faculty and staff innovation and community partnerships

Prevents tuition costs from rising

Just like any college, whether it is nonprofit or not, if it does not have adequate funding to provide students with the education each is in need of, it must pass that cost on to students through higher tuition.

But when the school has the right amount of funding, it does not need to raise tuition, making it more affordable for students.

Gives back to the community

Officials at Maricopa College Foundation have noticed when people choose to work toward and invest in a college education, they positively affect the community as well as themselves. Since 1977 the school’s foundation awarded more than $26 million in scholarships, positively impacting hundreds of thousands of students.

But it isn’t just individual colleges that have taken notice of this, but higher education institutions as a whole as well. In fact, according to research published on Collegeboard.com, higher levels of education correspond to lower unemployment and poverty rates, positively affected the earnings of workers with lower education levels and increased the levels of civic participation.redo

Ensures access to quality education locally

Having a community college in your area is invaluable because it means having easier access to higher education when you need it.

And with community colleges being the primary resource of higher education for nontraditional students, such as parents, those who work full time, as well as part-time students, it is necessary to have local resources as these for individuals to achieve educational goals.

A way of giving back

Whether you are able to donate financially or by way of time and resources, donating to the community college that helped you achieve your educational and professional goals is a way to give back.

Doing so can ensure that the college that helped you can continue to help others, and you can rest assured that your donation is going to a worthy cause.
