Arizona Republican softens anti-transgender bill

PHOENIX — An Arizona lawmaker has watered down legislation that would have
made it illegal for transgender people to use public bathrooms not associated
with their birth gender.

The move came after national civil rights group called it

Rep. John Kavanagh is expected to present the new version of his so-called
bathroom bill to a House committee on Wednesday.

The new version no longer makes it a crime for a person to use a public
bathroom not associated with the gender on their birth certificate.

Instead it said that local governments can’t force businesses to allow
transgender people to use public accommodations associated with their preferred
gender. It would also apply to locker rooms and dressing rooms.

Both the old and new version of the bill seek to undermine an
anti-discrimination law passed by the Phoenix City Council last month.
