TUCSON — Arizona transportation officials say Interstate 10 east of Tucson is open again.
A 21-mile section of the highway between Tucson and Benson was shut down Friday night and early Saturday so crews could remove the old Pantano Union Pacific Railroad bridge that passed over the highway.
With the bridge’s removal, most commercial trucks will be able to remain on I-10 instead of taking a 67-mile detour. The bridge was too low for many of today’s taller trucks.
The bridge removal is part of a $17 million improvement project. The interstate will be realigned and two new bridges will be built along with new retaining walls and drainage systems.
