Arizona politicians reintroduce legislation for mine

PHOENIX — Arizona members of Congress and the U.S. Senate have
reintroduced legislation for a proposed 7,000-foot-deep copper mine near

U.S. Reps. Paul Gosar and Ann Kirkpatrick claim the Southeast Arizona Land
Exchange and Conservation Act could create more than 3,700 jobs.

U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake say the mine would generate more than $64
billion in economic activity and tax revenue and could supply as much as 20
percent of the nation’s domestic copper demand.

Kirkpatrick’s district includes the proposed mine site. She acknowledges
longstanding opposition to the mine from tribes and environmental groups.

Under the bill, Resolution Copper Mining Co. would exchange more than 5,000
acres of environmentally sensitive land the company owns throughout Arizona for
about 2,400 acres of federal land 70 miles east of Phoenix.
