A woman looking out her window calmly describes a scene of chaos to the 911 operator moments after 18-year-old Steven Jones allegedly shot four people — killing NAU student Colin Brough.
The woman tells the 911 operator that someone got shot outside of Mountain View Hall and that there are people on the ground.
Another caller, a man sounding more distraught simply says, “Gunshots at Mountain View!” and describes of hearing three shots and maybe two more shots a minute later while another woman calls 911 screaming without much information.
At least six individuals reported the shooting to 911.
According to police, a physical confrontation between two student groups occurred around 1 a.m. Police first received a call about the gunfire at 1:20 a.m. Students were first alerted at 1:30 a.m. and about 20 minutes later the alert updated them that Jones had been detained.
Jones faces one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, NAU said. He is being held on $2 million bond. Jones will appear in court Oct. 15 for a Preliminary Hearing.
On Saturday, Brough was being remembered as a kind and generous person by friends.
“He was probably the most kind, most generous guy I ever met,” friend of the victim Corissa Coe said. “He was always someone who made sure everyone felt comfortable and was included at all times. He was someone who always cared about other people.”
