PHOENIX — Thousands of students and faculty members at Northern Arizona University gathered Friday night to remember a young man who was shot dead early that morning.

Colin Brough lost his life early Friday morning in a shooting that left three of his fraternity brothers wounded. He was shot twice. Brough’s friend, Corissa Coe, described him as a kind and generous man.

“He was probably the most kind, most generous guy I ever met,” she said. “He was always someone who made sure everyone felt comfortable and was included at all times. He was someone who always cared about other people.”

The other victims were identified as Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring, all of whom were apart of the Delta Chi Fraternity along with Brough. They are currently being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, but their conditions are unknown.

The suspect was identified by police as 18-year-old Steven Jones. Jones began shooting after a physical confrontation between two student groups occurred around 1 a.m.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside Mountain View Hall dormitory at the northeast side of the Flagstaff campus. The dormitory provides housing for many of the campus’ sororities and fraternities.

Coconino Deputy County Attorney Ammon Barker alleged Jones left the fight, retrieved the weapon from his car and returned to the fight.

“There is no indication of self-defense here,” Barker said. “The defendant had retreated from the fight, he obtained a gun and then he went back into the fray.”
